Representatives from the Anyigba community in Kogi State and a group of Islamic scholars of Bida in Niger State met with Zakzaky at his residence in the Nigerian capital of Abuja.

Mohammed Abdollahi, the Sunni scholar and leader of Tijaniyyah and Sheikh Mohammed bin Mohammed from Bida were among the attendees.

Sheikh Mohammed voiced support for Zakzaky during the meeting, officially announcing his conversion to Shia Islam.

To become a Shia, one does not have to abandon Tijaniyyah, Sheikh Zakzaky said, adding that one should abandon Maliki school to be able to follow Jafari school.

There are three main areas in Islam, namely oneness of God, Day of Judgement, and Prophethood and these are shared between all Muslims, he said.

To perform prayers and other acts such as fasting, Hajj, and marriage, Muslims need to follow a school and this is where they receive instructions from a faqih and differences arise between schools.

All Muslims who seek to find a religious path so as to establish a connection with their God are seeking a religious trip. This is tariqa and Sufism is one of the paths to connect to God, he said.

There are fundamental differences between tariqas and schools, he stressed.
