Al-Azhar Religious, Quranic Scholar Dies at 74
Thousands of Egyptians attended his funeral, at Al-Muwasali Mosque in an area south of the capital Cairo, Al-Jazeera reported.
Scholars and religious figures sent messages of condolences after the death of Sheikh Abdel Azim, who was a former head of the theology department at the university’s faculty of Islamic teachings.
They described him as a pious person and one of the greatest Muslim propagators who was devoted to the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
According to Mohamed al-Saqir, a former Awqaf minister of Egypt, Sheikh Abdel Azim was known for advocating a teaching method based on the love for the Holy Quran.
He said the late sheikh believed that memorizing the Holy Book is a duty for Muslims.
He gained fame among young people as well as adults because of his simple and elaborate speeches that are easy to understand for all groups, which were widely spread through the communication sites.
Born in 1948, Sheikh Abdel Azim had a PhD in Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) from Al-Azhar University’s faculty of theology.
