TEHRAN (IQNA) – Registration of those willing to travel to Iraq for Arbaeen rituals has concluded in Iran, an official said.

Hossein Zolfaqari, head of the Arbaeen Headquarters, said the registration concluded on Wednesday and the names of those approved to take the trip will soon be announced.

He added that issuing visas for the pilgrims will start on Saturday in cooperation with the Iraqi embassy in Tehran.

All of the pilgrims need to have received two doses of the coronavirus vaccine and have a negative PCR test with them when going to the airport to travel to Iraq, the official stated.

Arbaeen, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to the Iraqi city of Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

This year, Arbaeen falls on September 27.
