Iraqis Capable of Defending Their Country
According to the movement’s media office, Sayyed Ammar al-Hakim underlined that Iraqis are well capable of defending their country.
He made the remark in a meeting with a group of Iraqi young elites on Saturday, adding that with the end of Daesh, the presence of foreign forces is no longer necessary in Iraq.
On Friday, people rallied in Baghdad in massive numbers to call for an end to US military presence in Iraq following high-profile assassinations and airstrikes targeting anti-terror forces.
Earlier this month, Iraqi lawmakers unanimously approved a bill, demanding the withdrawal of all foreign military forces led by the United States from the country following the assassination of Iran’s top military commander, Lt. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, and the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.
The legislators used an extraordinary parliamentary session to vote on a resolution requiring the government to press Washington and its allies to withdraw their troops from Iraq.
General Soleimani, al-Muhandis, and a number of their entourage were killed in a strike by American drones near Baghdad International Airport in the early hours of January 3.
The White House and the Pentagon claimed responsibility for the assassination of General Soleimani in Iraq, saying the attack was carried out at the direction of US President Donald Trump.
