TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Iraqi Interior Ministry announced on Wednesday that five members of the Daesh terrorist group were arrested in Mosul city.

“A force of the 12th police emergency regiment of the Nineveh Police Command arrested five Daesh militants, who are involved in terrorist acts in Mosul city,” the Interior Ministry spokesman, Maj. Gen. Saad Maan, said.

Three of the arrestees were members of Daesh’s so-called Jund (soldiers) Diwan, the spokesman said, Iraqi News reported.

They were arrested in al-Shaimaa, al-Quds, al- Qadisiyyah and al-Maa’mon districts in Mosul, he added.

Former Iraqi prime minister Haider al-Abadi announced in July 2017 liberation of the second largest Iraqi city of Mosul from Daesh militants, who had captured it in 2014. More than 25,000 militants were killed throughout the campaign, which started in October 2016.

Iraq declared the collapse of Daesh’s territorial influence in Iraq in November 2017 with the recapture of Rawa, a city on Anbar’s western borders with Syria, which was the group’s last bastion in Iraq.
