TEHRAN (IQNA) – Commander of Iran's Basij Force Brigadier General Gholam Hossein Gheibparvar underlined that Iranian advisers will remain in Syria as long as the legitimate government of the Arab country wants it.

Speaking to IQNA, General Gheibparvar added that Iran will ask for no one’s permission for its presence in Syria.

He made the remarks in response to a question about a recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland, during which Trump urged that Iranians leave the Arab country.

“What the Islamic Republic of Iran does in the region is based on a fundamental principle and our logic is bolstering the front of resistance and confronting the occupying regime of Israel that has been and will remain one of our causes…,” General Gheibparvar said.

“So long as the Syria government wants it, we will remain in this country and no other country can seek negotiations about Iran’s exit from Syria or give us ultimatums and we will not ask for permission from any country (in this regard).”

Elsewhere, the senior commander underlined that the so-called “deal of century” proposed by Trump about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will not materialize.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently fighting against the central government.

In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.
