TEHRAN (IQNA) – In a ceremony held in the Mauritanian capital of Nouakchott on Thursday, winners of a regional Quran contest held in the country were awarded.

The awarding ceremony was attended by a number of political and religious officials, including the country’s education minister.

The minister in an address described the Quran contest as a testimony to the importance the Mauritanian government attaches to Quranic and Islamic activities.

He said the competition is aimed at encouraging the youth to learn the Quran, promoting Quranic teachings, and preventing extremism.

Representatives of Morocco, Mauritania, Tunisia, Algeria, Senegal, The Gambia, Ivory Coast, and Niger took part in the regional Quranic event, held on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.

The participants competed in the category of memorization and Tajweed recitation of the Quran.

The top winner was Ahmed Nouredding Ould al-Dabaq from the host country.

Ibrahim Khalil Jalu from Ivory Coast was the runner up and Muaz Fattan from Algeria came third.

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a country in North Africa.

Muslims make up over 98 percent of the population.
